Easy At-Home Facials for Beginners

Going for a facial is a luxurious escape away from the daily routine. Imagine having someone to pamper your skin, and give your face a nice, soothing treatment as you slowly drift off to wonderland. But for some working adults or stay-at-home mums who really don't have the time to get away from their busy lives, going for facials is something they can only dream of amidst their daily chaos. If you've haven't been able to find the time during the past 3 months for a facial appointment, you may be one of the mentioned, but that doesn't mean you can't bring the luxury of facials to your own home!

Yes, it makes a world of a difference to have someone massaging into your skin while you take a 2-hour nap. But even if you are doing it yourself, you can still achieve glowing skin - without the hefty price tag that comes along with each facial treatment.

 Step 1: Prep

Before you start your at-home facial, put on some comfortable clothes, tie your hair back or wear a headband to keep your hairs out of your face. You might want to do this in the evening or during the weekends, because an at-home facial is best done when you're not rushing for time.

Start by removing any traces of makeup with a makeup remover like HYSSES Micellar Cleansing Toner, because you want to start your facial on a clean face.

Step 2: Oil Cleanse

Cleansing with an oil cleanser helps to get rid of all the gunk that's been sitting on top of your skin. Your skin may look nice and fresh after removing your makeup, but what you can't see with your naked eye is the microscopic residue that's clogging your pores and all the dead skin cells which makes your skin looks dull and older than you are. A good oil cleanser is gentle yet effective on the skin, so it's important to choose one that suits your skin type.

Step 3: Double Cleanse

Now that your skin is stripped clean, you can start by cleansing your skin with a facial wash. Washing your face not only thoroughly cleanses the skin surface, but it also nourishes and addresses common skin concerns.

When cleansing the face, lather your facial wash on damp skin and massage until foamy. Depending on the type of cleanser you use, the amount of foam may vary.

Step 4: Exfoliate

Complete your cleansing routine with a gentle facial scrub. Try to stay away from harsh abrasives that have large granules, or alternatively, you can also opt for chemical exfoliants such as AHA that work to peel off the outer layer of your skin rather than physically sloughing it off with a physical exfoliant. You can choose to skip this step if your skin is sensitive or prone to breakouts easily.

To exfoliate your skin, make sure that your skin is slightly damp before you apply your scrub. This step should take no longer than 1 minute as exfoliating too long on your skin will lead to tears and infections on the skin's surface.

Step 4: Detoxifying Mask

Usually, in a facial treatment, there will be a process of extraction where the facial therapist would use tools to manually extract your facial congestion, mainly your blackheads and whiteheads. This process can sometimes be uncomfortable or painful, especially if the area of extraction is on the more sensitive parts of the face such as the lower jaw or the chin.

For an at-home facial, you can use a detoxifying clay mask such as the Charcoal Volcanic Clay Mask that uses activated charcoal to draw out impurities from deep within the skin and oil-controlling ingredients such as bentonite clay and tea tree essential oils to control sebum production. This will give you visibly smaller pores and a firmer complexion.

Step 5: Nourishing Mask

If you don't struggle with congestion or are blessed with little to no open pores, you can skip the detoxifying mask and jump straight to nourishing your skin. You might be mistaken if you think that slathering a day cream is sufficient to nourish your skin. What your skin needs during this pampering session is a highly concentrated dose of skin-penetrating serums to target specific skin concerns such as ageing, pigmentation and dehydration. A bio-cellulose mask made out of hydrophilic coconut fibres is best for this step. Use a sheet for 15 minutes and peel away - you'll see that your skin has absorbed all the nutrients of the serum that comes with the mask.

Step 6: Moisturize

At the very last step of your facial, it is important to moisturise and hydrate your skin with a facial cream. Facial creams replenish lost moisture in your skin and keep your skin soft and dewy all day. To ensure all-day hydration, it is essential that you lock in the moisture with an occlusive face oil such as HYSSES Beauty Oils. These beauty oils will not only protect your skin from drying out, but it also strengthens your skin barrier against environmental factors.

Beauty oils can be mixed in with your facial cream, and a little goes a long way, so all you need to do is to add a drop or two of your beauty oil into your facial cream and apply.

Step 7: Protect

This is an optional step if you are doing an at-home facial and have no plans to leave your home after that. But if you are, you'll need a sunscreen to protect your skin from UV rays. Sun exposure can accelerate skin ageing, so having plenty of protection is key to youthful-looking skin, always.
