Covid-19: Life After Circuit Breaker

Life after quarantine will not be easy. This new normal will need some getting used to. In Singapore, Phase 1 still does not allow us for much freedom. Sure, some of us can slowly go back to work and some students can go back to school, but there is not much that we can do aside from that. We can visit family now, but visitation is limited to 2 people per day. So no, life will not go back to normal after this circuit breaker.

Adapting to life after the circuit breaker will be tough. With minimum freedom to go anywhere aside from work can still take a toll on someone’s mental and physical health. While we are waiting for the government to announce when Phase 2 will commence, we still have to abide by the law and follow similar precautions as before.

As Phase 1 commences, it may be a bit difficult to carry on with life during this pandemic. Going to work or going to school with a mask on, walking around a ghost town since no one is out and about, and having to limit interactions with people, especially family will make you feel slightly off.

In quarantine, it is easier because you are just at home. But actually getting to get out of the house and go to work or school, you will definitely feel lonelier than normal due to the limited interactions with colleagues, friends, and family, and safe distancing.

Additionally, the added measures and precautions at workplaces and schools will feel foreign and may not help with the already increasing anxiety that most people developed because of this pandemic.

However, that being said, we still have to try to adapt to this life as well as we can for now. The sooner everyone realizes that and do their part, the sooner this pandemic will be over (hopefully). A lot has changed, and this pandemic has certainly caused an unprecedented shift in our way of life and daily routine. Going back to the old normal is obviously not an option as there are restrictions and fundamental shifts to our daily routine.

Now, here is what you can do to help yourself transition from quarantine life to a new semi-normal life after a circuit breaker.

  1. Keep in mind that this will all be over soon

By assuring yourself that this pandemic will be over soon, your anxiety will not spiral and make it even harder for you to transition.

  1. Keep calm

With the anxiety and worry that this pandemic has caused, it is easy to give in to those negative feelings and start overthinking. Be sure to keep calm and tame your worries. As long as you abide by the law and practice good hygiene, there is no reason for you to feel anxious about going to work or school.

  1. Make new habits

By making new habits, you are allowing yourself a sense of normalcy in the midst of this pandemic and it will make it easier for you to continue on. Without new habits and not being able to do your old habits due to the restrictions, you may feel lost and unfamiliar with the way the world is now. So make sure you create a new routine as soon as possible as that can help you feel more grounded.

  1. Stay connected in new ways

Just because we can no longer see our friends or family, doesn’t mean we can’t connect with them. Technology has come a long way and it allows us to video call our loved ones in the comfort and safety of our own homes. Yes, it is different from talking to them face to face but for now, connecting with your loved ones via technology will be sure to keep yourself sane and have a semblance of normalcy.

  1. Allow yourself a break

Adjusting to a new normal is very difficult. It is okay if you are still unsure about what you want to do or if you still have worries and anxiety about what comes next. Allow yourself time to adjust and adapt. If it is too overwhelming, you can take a step back. Your mind and body have been in a constant state of fear of the unknown, so it is understandable if your anxiety increases. Take it step by step and before you know it, we are all living somewhat normal lives after this pandemic.
