Some of the rising issues of ageing is the increase of back aches and muscle aches that intensifies during cold weather. Part of this is caused by poor health management in the younger years, causing problems such as rheumatism and joint pain as we age.

It is common for the older generation to put on pain relief patches and apply ointments and creams on areas that are aching, such as the joints, backs and shoulders. But these pain relief patches and ointments often carries a strong unpleasant odour, and it isn’t exactly skin-friendly for those with sensitive skin.

Natural Joint Pain Relief with Aromatherapy

Essential oils can be a way to relieve joint pains. It can be administered in 2 ways, through inhalation and topical application.

Inhalation

Diffusing essential oils in the environment can have positive emotional effects on health, but how does that relate to relieving pain? Essential oils can help with amping up the atmosphere in the room, boosting energy levels and getting rid of fatigue and tiredness. It lifts the emotional weight off the shoulders, making life more enjoyable and less worrisome.

Such essential oils that are suitable for inhalation are Lavender, Bergamot and Ylang Ylang

Topical application

Essential oils can also be applied topically on the skin, but there is a method to it. It is not as simple as dripping a few drops of essential oil onto your palm and massaging into the skin because essential oils are concentrated and extremely potent, so diluting them with a suitable carrier oil is always recommended before any skin application.

Herbal Compress Treatment

When it comes to relieving pain, there is also a well-known practice in Asia using an herbal compress ball to soothe muscle aches and improve blood circulation. This traditional technique was originated from Thailand and had been used for many years.

How does it work?

The herbal compress is essentially a piece of cloth that binds numerous herbs into a ball-like shape. This ball is then placed atop a warmer or steamer to heat up the surface of the compress. The herbal compress can be applied in a pounding, rolling or tapping motion to stimulate the lymphatic system and encourage better blood circulation throughout the body. As the hot compress is in contact with the skin, its contents are released into the body, relieving joint pains, muscle aches and sprains. It can also be used to reduce swelling, and also on the abdomen area to relieve menstrual cramping.
