Skincare 101 – Tailoring the Perfect Skincare Regimen

Ever felt so overwhelmed by the different types of skincare products that you have no clue which to start with and which comes after? It’s no surprise that plenty of women (and men) are unsure of the correct sequence in applying skincare products, not knowing if serums should be applied before or after toners, or if cleansers can be substituted as make up removers.

The perfect skincare regimen is not achieved by sweeping an entire line of skincare range from your favourite brand, but rather, curating each step to suit your skin’s individual needs, and feeding your skin with just the right amount of nutrients it needs. Here, we guide you on the how-tos of applying your skincare products correctly, from the first step to the last.

Step 1: Remove
When: Daily; night

To begin your skincare routine, use a makeup remover to remove all traces of makeup from your skin. A good makeup remover such as HYSSES Geranium Chamomile Micellar Cleansing Toner is gentle on your skin and does not strip your skin of its natural oils. You should not substitute your face wash as a makeup remover because face washes do not dissolve makeup the way makeup removers do, furthermore, many cosmetics in the market are smudgeproof, waterproof and oil-proof so a basic face wash isn’t going to cut it.

Cleanse
When: Daily; morning & night

If you are thinking to skip this step in the morning, don’t. Cleansing your face in the morning might seem redundant to some because why cleanse when you’ve already did it the night before, right? Don’t be mistaken that your face will still be free from debris after lying on your pillow for almost 8 hours. A morning face cleanse will get rid of impurities such as sebum, dead skin cells and any dirt that your skin picked up in the night.

Exfoliate
When: Once a week; morning or night

Your skin needs a power scrub once in a while to effectively remove any dead skin cells that may have accumulated over the past week. Exfoliating will also allow new skin cells to regenerate, making the skin appear brighter and less dull. Try to avoid scrubs that contain microbeads, instead, go for scrubs with natural exfoliants such as apricot seeds and plant enzymes.

Tone
When: Daily; morning & night

After cleansing, apply toner using a cotton pad. It is recommended to complete this step immediately after you have cleansed your face to prevent your skin from drying out. Toners will remove the last bits of debris that your cleanser and makeup remover may have missed out and will also balance your skin’s pH levels and prep it for the next step.

Mask
When: Once a week, morning or night

If you are not in a rush, do squeeze in a few extra minutes for a mask treatment. The best time to apply a face mask is after toning your face because that it when your skin is most ready to absorb the nutrients. Let your mask do its job while you sit back and give yourself a break.

PRO TIP: If you are using a sheet mask, don’t be in a hurry to throw the packet away after taking the mask out. There is probably some extra leftover liquid inside the packet which you can apply onto your neck, arms and elbows.

Treat/Serum
When: Daily; morning or night

Serums are the antidote to your skincare concerns. Whether its fine lines, pigmentation or dull skin – there is always a serum to remedy it. Try HYSSES Collagen Serum in your skincare regimen to see the difference! Despite its small volume, serums are packed with highly concentrated active ingredients so just a drop or two of your serum will be enough to penetrate deep into your skin layers, providing targeted treatment to your skin’s condition.

Moisturize
When: Daily; morning & night

Moisturizers contain humectants and emollients with each ingredient serving different purposes. Humectants such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid draw moisture from the environment to the skin’s surface and locks in the moisture while emollients like jojoba oils gets absorbed into the skin to replace lipids and make the skin look plump and dewy.

Moisturizers have the thickest consistency among most skincare products, so ample time should be given before moving on to the next step otherwise you will risk having the next products piling and end up clogging your pores.

Protect/Sunscreen
When: Daily; morning

Once your skin feels smooth and no longer tacky from the moisturizer, you can proceed with applying sunscreen or BB cream if you prefer a light coverage. Did you know that it takes approximately 15 minutes for your skin to start burning up? Applying a sunscreen that offers a SPF 40++ protection will allow 10 hours of sun exposure. This step should not be overlooked because a lack of sun protection will result in the skin being damaged by the sun’s UV rays.
